About the Pius Oleghe Poetry and Literary Awards

The Pius Oleghe Poetry and Literary Awards are named in honour of Pius Oleghe — a gifted poet, visionary educator, and passionate believer in the power of language to shape minds and societies. As one of the founding figures of the National Association of Seadogs like Wole Soyinka, Oleghe was a dedicated teacher who nurtured generations of young thinkers.

Established to celebrate his legacy, the award seeks to recognise new literary voices that carry forward his commitment to imagination, clarity, education, and justice. It celebrates poetry not only as art but as an instrument of reflection, dreaming, and transformation.

Each year, the prize highlights a theme that resonates with Nigeria’s cultural, ethical, and national aspirations. The theme for the 2026 edition is: The Nigeria of Our Dreams

The Nigeria of Our Dreams

What kind of country do you long for?

What kind of country do you long for? What futures live in your voice? What visions rise in your words when you imagine a Nigeria shaped by hope, fairness, beauty, and courage?

Through this theme, we invite poets across generations to envision and articulate the nation we dare to dream.
